Talloires

Abbaye de Talloires

Talloires is situated in the eastern shore of the lake of Annecy, and benefits by the mountains.
Place of peace and gastronomy, Talloires favours relaxation and harmony.

This nice setting has propably been occupied from time immemorial.

In 866, Lothaire II has gived the territory of Talloires to his wife Thiberge. She has ordered to build a little and modest religious establishment (where there is the famous recent Abbaye): some places opened to wandering monks around a chapel. She has lived there until her death.

This setting becomes quickly a little monastery.

One hundred and fifty years later, the property of Talloires was given by the King and the Queen of Bourgogne, Rodolphe III and Ermengarde to the benedictine Abbaye of Savigny.

The first Prior Germain built, with the help of the villagers of Talloires, a nice and  tall church because the Chapel of Thiberge was fallen in ruins.

Monks take place rapidly on this setting and during six centuries, the Prior grows rich thanks to the gifts by bishops, Counts de Geneve and the Dukes of Savoie.

In 1674, the pope Clément writes a brief which sets up the Prieuré badge in Abbaye Royale.
So, the decline started.

The monks, true feudal lords, carried out a dissolue’s life which caused a spirit of rebellion among the population. The Revolution reached Talloires only in July 1792. So the bell-tower of the church broke down (it is said that its bells still lie at the bottom of the lake and its ruins were definitively shaven in 1833) and old files nourished the flame of immense stake on the place of the chestnut trees...

Then Talloires was made forget during a few decades before the beauty of  landscapes attracts the privileged people of a society of artists, writers and idlers. One, then two inns, accomodated the travellers come by boat from Annecy.

It is the beginnig of this century which saw to open out the world fame of Talloires as well by its admirable site as by  its gastronomy and its reception of quality.
